The Xerox Phaser 6140 Laser Printer is a device that, though highly overpriced, is capable of executing full color laser printing as well as a slew of other functions not found in lower end models. The device is certainly no longer top of the line, but serves its purpose in a niche color laser market.
The Xerox Phaser 6140 Laser Printer boasts a print resolution of 600 x 600 x 4 dots per inch. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly low 600 dpi numbers, this units additional bit depth results in color imagery that matches or exceeds that of 1200 x 1200 dpi printers in perceivable quality.
The way that the printer’s 4 bit depth works is by having varying densities in each bit color, meaning that instead of simply being “on or off,” each individual bit can vary in shade. This results in a much more accurate image replication and truer color printing performance.
Expandability is an option, though only in limited quantities. The Xerox Phaser 6140 Laser Printer’s standard 250 sheet paper tray can be added on to with a single additional 250 sheet tray, bringing the unit’s total potential paper storage capacity to 500 sheets.
Networking comes as standard issue for this device, making it easy to setup and share across and entire office and thus add color print capabilities where it may not have existed before, and cost effective toner and a low cost per page help to keep color laser printing a financially feasible option.
The device’s built in 400 MHz processor is fairly average for a color laser printer, but its maximum monthly duty cycle of 40,000 makes it perfect for offices that require high volumes of printing in both color and black and white. It is also compatible with a variety of media types on top of standard letter and legal sized paper. The unit can print to glossy paper, card stock, labels, and envelopes, making it perfect for handling special color print projects both professionally and otherwise.
CONS:
The area where the Xerox Phaser 6140 Laser Printer truly shows its age is in print speed. The unit can only execute a minimalistic 19 pages per minute when printing in color. Black and white print speed does not receive any significant improvement in speed and tops out at only 21 pages per minute. With a first page out time of a very sluggish 13 seconds, even single page print processes will seemingly take forever to output.
In other areas, the device is also notably behind the curve. Its toner cartridges carry an unheard of 1,000 pages each, placing it at the rock bottom of the category when it comes to toner yield. Additionally, the Xerox Phaser 6140 Laser Printer is just plain too big, even for a color laser device. Sitting at 15.8 x 18 x 18.4 inches (W x D x H), the unit takes up a heft amount of space and, standing at over a foot and a half tall, the unit is awkward to fit into some work areas.
CONSUMABLES
Both OEM and third party toner cartridges are available for the Xerox Phaser 6140. The three standard toner colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow) offer users 2,000 page yields each while the available black cartridge is capable of up to 2,600 pages of yield at 5% coverage. While OEM cartridges are preferred by those who require the absolute maximum possible color accuracy, bargain hunters will appreciate the low cost of third party equipment which can cost literally 85% less than OEM.
