The HP DeskJet 970cxi is a printer designed to provide high resolution color printing capabilities in a compact, inkjet package. Standing at a height of only 7.7 inches, this photo quality device makes owning a color printer suitable for the personal user.

A footprint of about 17 inches by 17 inches is above average for a unit of this caliber, and reveals this discontinued model’s age to a degree, but is still well within reasonable limits for a home office. The HP DeskJet 970cxi’s weight of 14.7 pounds is also slightly above average but, again, within acceptable parameters.

While the HP DeskJet 970cxi’s maximum black and white print speed is only 10 pages per minute, in an odd twist of fate its color speed clocks in at a faster rate of 12 pages per minute. Monochrome and color specifications also differ in maximum resolution settings, with black and white topping out at only 600 x 600 dots per inch and high resolution color printing obtainable at quality levels of up to 2400 x 1200 dots per inch.

To achieve maximum photographic color quality, photo paper is required, but mixed text and color standard documents are optional as well at standard resolutions for professional looking presentations or graphical reports. Further increasing the aesthetic potential of these types of work loads is a duplex option that allows for double sided printing, which makes for not only professional looking output, but saves on paper usage as well.

A standard USB port is implemented into the The HP DeskJet 970cxi’s hardware for Windows based system compatibility, while Macintosh users will have to resort to the open Parallel port. 4 MBs of built in RAM will help keep either operating style moving along according to specifications, though no additional memory slots are available for upgrades.

The HP DeskJet 970cxi supports a wide range of media types including standard letter and legal sized paper, along with special media including photo paper, labels, heavy weight coated paper, iron on transfers, coated paper, transparencies, envelopes, glossy paper, and even greeting cards. The device also comes equipped with a 150 sheet input tray for large individual projects and minimal paper shortage issues.

Overall operating power consumption numbers run very low, and are easily within Energy Star EPA compliant range. In sleep mode, the device uses only 4 W of energy, and only 25 W while in operational mode. One of the benefits of a smaller, personal device such as the HP DeskJet 970cxi is the reduced operating cost due to low power consumption, in spite of heavily reduced speeds.

With a limited maximum monthly duty cycle of only 5,000 imprinted pages total, it is clear that the HP DeskJet 970cxi was never intended as an office grade device, as continuous use would almost certainly cause mechanical issues. That being said, the HP DeskJet 970cxi would make an excellent addition to the personal user who requires the addition of high quality color capability at a low output speed’s hardware set.
