Not every business requires a state of the art, four figure multifunction center that can copy at speeds above a hundred pages per minute. Some users, such as students, home business owners, or hobbyists, have much lighter copy demands. For them, Canon has put together its PC, or Personal Copier, line of products. The Canon PC-140 is a unit so compact and manageable it could even be called a portable device, and its stand alone copy abilities are perfect for the user with extremely light copy demands.

Topping out at only 4 copies per minute, the Canon PC-140 should not be considered when high output is required. For the user who would like to add copy capabilities to their hardware collection, but has no desire to shell out the money for higher price tagged multifunctional units, this affordable unit should do the trick, regardless of copy speed.

Thanks to Canon’s rapid fusing system, warm up time on the Canon PC-140 is virtually zero. One of the major plusses to a stripped down unit such as this is that you can virtually open the box, plug it in, and press copy, and with no warm up time, you will be making duplications almost immediately. For users who consider single button controls such as this a bonus and not a downside when compared to machines with extensive menus navagatable through an LCD display, the bare bones operation of the PC-140 should serve quite nicely.

Unfortunately, the overall size, or lack thereof, of the unit does come with certain limitations. The range of paper thicknesses of the Canon PC-140 is extremely limited, with only 17 lb to 32 lb paper weights compatible with the paper tray. That being said, there is virtually no limitation to the size of the source material. Any thickness paper will do, along with books, magazines, and even three dimensional objects that can fit onto the platen document glass.

The paper tray is also very limited, with room for only 50 sheets of 20 lb paper, and even less when thicker weight is used. This is to be expected, however, when a unit such as the Canon PC-140 stands amazingly at only 4.5 inches tall, with a footprint of 14.1″ x 17.3″ without accessories (when the paper trays are folded out, the length becomes 32 inches). Its weight is a mere 18.7 pounds, making the unit very mobile and useful for those who require a copy machine that can travel around with them.

The Canon PC-140 is a very basic device, but that doesn’t mean it comes without a small set of helpful features. They include selectable automatic or manual exposure, for fine tuning shading, an auto shut off to save energy, and a carrying handle for added versatility and mobility. Power consumption runs at an extremely low .65 kw, making this unit easily Energy Star certified.

Because the Canon PC-140 is an analog, stand alone unit, it does not come equipped with a USB port, and can therefore not be used as a printer or scanner. It is designed as an affordable solution for those who require only light copying, and achieves this competently.
