Much like all the models in Canon’s 6500 series, the Canon Copier ImageClass MF6590 is a printer that combines multiple high end features into a single unit. In this case, networking is also an included option via a built in Ethernet port to help connect an entire system of small to medium sized office computers.
It would seem that all the standard features you find on most printers have been pumped up to a professional level on the Canon Copier ImageClass MF6590, including a legal sized document glass not found on some of the other models in the series, which makes single pass copies of books and magazines easy. Or, for multiple copies, the now standard 50 sheet automatic document feeder can do the work for you, and can also be used when scanning and faxing.
When duplexing is included in a multifunction center, the entire unit becomes more efficient on all fronts. When sending and receiving from machines that also are capable with duplex faxing, double sided faxes can be processed automatically. Duplex scanning, with the help of the ADF, allows single files to be sent straight to the PC or Mac that include both sides of a piece of hard source material. Then, of course, there’s duplex printing, which saves paper and produces professional looking documents.
Canon has made an effort recently to present their products as green, or environmentally friendly. The Canon Copier ImageClass MF6590 is no exception and actually carries a whopping three total environmental stamps of approval, including The Clean Earth Campaign, Energy Star certification, and Canon’s own “Canon Generation Green.” If nothing else, reducing energy consumption will cut operating costs, especially for machines in constant use. The imageCLASS MF6590 operates at a 780W max power consumption ensuring this, and also has a standby mode.
The Canon Copier ImageClass MF6590 comes equipped with all the software compatibility now standard in their products, including support for Windows® 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Mac® OS X 10.2.8-10.6, but this network ready unit is also compatible with Microsoft’s Sever applications, making your network usage even more efficient.
Even with Server, however, scanning has been disabled for network use. PC Fax, however, is alive and ready, and allows users to send digital media on their computers directly to a hard copy format on a receiving end via the unit’s built in 33.6 kbps modem. Hard copies, in turn, can be faxed directly to a digital recipient.
When dealing with professional grade printers such as this, price is often locked at a premium, and, unfortunately there is no exception here. This 54 pound piece of heavy duty hardware is not as cheap as lesser models on the consumer end of the scale, but the features are arguably worth the price if your output demands are high. Although networking capabilities are a luxury that has dropped drastically in price over the past few years, if it is not a necessity, a similar model without Ethernet may be advised. Other than that, however, the Canon Copier imageCLASS MF6590 is a solid choice on all fronts for the medium sized workload.
